LEARNAdult Education

“Let us learn in order to teach. Let us learn in order to do!”

The Valley Temple has four different Hebrew classes for adults: two on Tuesday evenings and two on Thursday evenings.  In addition, there are seminars on a variety of topics taught by either our rabbi or a scholar from the University of Cincinnati Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC-JIR), or a visiting scholar. Past topics have included:  Talmud, basic Judaism, prayer, understanding the Prophets, Jews on Broadway, Abraham Lincoln & the Jews, George Washington & the Jews, Jewish humor, and the Jewish way in death and dying.   Each semester we select a book for a book club-style discussion.  In addition, there are regular gatherings as follows:

Torah Study on Saturdays at 9:30 AM – No experience required! Come explore and discuss the weekly Torah portion with Rabbi Kopnick or a rabbinic student from HUC-JIR.

Adult Hebrew–Four levels from beginner (no prior experience) to advanced. Come learn the language of our liturgy and the Torah!  Classes meet once a week in the evening and follow the religious school calendar.

Selichot – Adult learning opportunity leading into the High Holy Days with a scholar-in-residence. Topics have included: Jewish A Cappella, Atonements, Apologies and Excuses: Saying ‘sorry’ in the 21st century, Prophets and Profits and the Economics of Enough, You Can Go Home Again: Memories, Meaning and Loss.
